I watched this movie with Kate Hudson and was very confused on the plot. What was going on?

Easy.
The elderly woman was the spirit of the Black female slave. And the young lawyer was the spirit of the Black male slave.
They had successfully transferred the spirit of the lawyer into the old man and were looking for a young woman for the Black female slave. but all the young black girls kept running away.
So in the scene where the 2 were hanged - the slaves were already in the bodies of the children - so the spirits of the children were the ones who were hanged.
AT the end of the movie - Kate Hudson and the young lawyer were now the elderly black couple - and the elderly couple in the ambulance were actually Kate Hudson and the 'real' lawyer.

It was a good movie. You see, the old lady and her husband used voodoo magic to take over the bodies off younger people. But they couldn't do that until the person believed in the magic. Hence, the elaborate arrangements to make Kate Hudson's character 'believe'.

The two were trying to trick her into switching places using Voodoo magic, they wanted her youthful body, and they succeeded. They had to force her into that voodoo circle and to do the magic, and the entire plot was the trick to convince her to doing it.
