I live Florida. I moved into this home last April and we put a lock on the thermostat in May or June and since then the bill has gone up at least a $100 each month. Is this box preventing the thermostat to run properly and contributing to the high bills?

Yes, if your thermostat lock looks like a box with vent holes, the cool air doesn’t reach the thermostat as quickly and the A/C runs longer. The summer months are also the hottest months, and you’re A/C is working much more—that will cost you more. With the cooler weather coming, you should see your electric bill coming down.

I’m not sure why you put in thermostat locks, but you might be better served by a digital thermostat. There are also commercial digital thermostats with no adjustment knobs or buttons for the kids to play with—these are more expensive.

Does the Air cond ever shut off? What is it set at? Does the temp go down?
The temp you have it set at is the likely cause. Can you set it at 78 and use a ceiling fan?
The installation of a locking cover is rarely the cause, but the setting is the key.
How about other electric users? Lights left on, washing machine-dryer-dish washer during high peak charge hours...
There is a lot of info out there on how to cut your bill.

Figure out which circuit in your house is using the most power. Find the electric meter, and put one person there watching it. The wheel should be turning when you do this...

The other person turns breakers, then on, one by one, until the wheel stops or slows dramatically. That's the circuit that's drawing most of the power. It might be your AC system (in Florida, in June, you can almost guarantee it).

Once you figure out the circuit, figure out what's on that circuit, and you're on your way to cutting the power bill.

call the company. could be the price went up. go to epa.gov to find info on the most economic thermostat settings. what is it set to? could be that it's too low ( i asume you use for air cond. since in fla.) for example, if you have it at 72, then the ac unit will start if it gets above 72. could be that before you locked it, people adjusted it according to how they felt, so if were comfortable at 74/75, the unit would start less often. that two degrees in setting could add up to $100/mo.
