During the Great Depression in the US, which began on October 29, 1929, gainful employment was practically nonexistent for African-Americans. The only available jobs were as porters for the Pullman Rail Company (which paid blacks one-third of what white employees make). Journalist Philip Randolph made it his mission to help these forgotten workers -- called "George," after company founder George Pullman. It culminated with the formation of the first black union in America.

Also, two white women accused nine black teenagers, who were later called "The Scottsboro Boys," of raping them on a Southern Railroad freight run in 1931, setting off a twenty year long chain reaction that eventually reached the Supreme Court -- and launched the modern-day Civil Rights movement.

This site has a civil rights chronology beginning in 1619. It's a list by year of each one.
