It would depend on the state you are in. Most states do have "cease and desist" rules, so that if you tell them to stop harassing you they must. This is merely civil law, so you would have to turn them in to be fined.

It's not state law, it's Federal law, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

A debt collector may not contact you at work if the collector knows that your employer disapproves of such contacts.

You can stop a debt collector from contacting you by writing a letter to the collector telling them to stop. Once the collector receives your letter, they may not contact you again except to say there will be no further contact or to notify you that the debt collector or the creditor intends to take some specific action.

If the debt collector recommended that neighbor that he/she become attempting to collect a debt, what the debt become for, or the quantity of the debt, it would properly be a contravention of federal regulation -- if the concepts become no longer printed, then it likely isn't unlawful -- yet, once you're extremely in contact, see an lawyer.

It isn't against the law until the are told not to contact you again at work and this being followed up by a letter to the company. There are no differences in states. This is a federal law.

No, not unless you tell them not to call you because they will cause you to loose your job. Or your boss is able to tell them not to call his line. Remember, they are not the IRS. They are a person like you who has a job and they will be fired or loose money if they don't collect for their boss. They use fear and intimidation to get what they want. You don't have to take it. In the future give a cell phone as your call and never give out your social security number especially to a doctors office, because they will use it only to try and find you.

In some states it is, in some states it isn't. You'd have to check with your state. Most states it isn't.
