My husband gets FMLA and is able to get up to 6 weeks off when i give birth. I dont work so i dont know how the whole maternity leave works. He said They changed the laws recently and Men get alot of what women get. He said their is a women at his work on maternity leave right now and she is getting paid time off. Does that mean he can get paid time off? Or do you think it all depends on his job. He works for CAT so pretty big corp. I mean even if he doesnt get paid for it i think him being able to have that much time off is amazing! They really are trying to make us equal huh? What do you think?

I have FMLA to take care of my grandson who has epilepsy, and the way it works is this....I can take a certain amount of time off per year, but it still comes out of my vacation/sick time. As long as I have time to take, I will be paid. Any time I would take off over that will be NOT paid. FMLA only guarantees that you will have a job. I would guess that if your husband has not accumulated enough sick or vacation time to cover 6 weeks off, he will NOT be paid for it, but it will not count against him as far as being an excessive absentee. Hope this helped.

Actually, everyone that has a job is eligible to get FMLA. And they are entitled to up to 12 weeks off. Now, your husband has had to have been at CAT for 12 months and worked a certain number of hours before he is actually eligible to take FMLA. I gave birth to my daughter 6 weeks ago yesterday and I'm taking FMLA. I got paid for the first 6 weeks because I chose to take out short term disability through my employer and it covered maternity leave. However, the last 6 weeks are unpaid. But just as you said it is well worth the time off no matter if it's paid or unpaid. You can have your husband check with his Human Resource clerk at CAT and see what kind of info they can give him. Hope this helps!!

The FMLA only gives them time off - it does not however entitle them to pay. That would be a company policy - and your husband needs to speak to HR. The only reason I can see a female who gave birth getting paid time and a man not is that the woman may be claiming it as short term disability because most doctors recommend 6 weeks minimum after the birth of a child.

But hey if his company pays him for it then kudos to them! My husbands boss give 5 paid days to every guy who becomes a Dad because he's just a daumn nice man!

FMLA is not paid time off. You have to use your vacation and sick time before it kicks in. I think men should always have been able to take off to help with a new baby. There were there for the creation so its only right that they are there for the middle of the night feedings and diaper changes.

One of my co-workers actually used this the other day. Your husband is entitled to those six weeks for "pregnancy" leave. And yes we get paid for it. Pretty awesome to get pregnancy leave and not have to give birth or nothing.
