I hate to be the one to break this to you, but these are normal times. The ten years of serenity in the 1990s was a fluke in history. For as long as I can remember, and I can recall when Eisenhower was president, the world has always been on the eve of destruction.

Nothing.... outside of spending taxes to support the military and police...first of all, the odds of terrorists hitting my part of the nation (which over a 1 million people live) are virtually the same odds of a huge meteor hitting my city.
Let's deal with the facts: nuclear capability from a nation like Pakistan or Iran or Syria does not have the current technology to travel to our shores.
If a terrorist carries a "dirty bomb" (assuming that it will go off at the first attempt) it will probably do less damage than Hurricane Katrina did. And look at all the preparation that we invest in avoiding complications from natural disasters.. Nothing.
We really need to stop being paranoid and over-reacting. It was a tragedy that 9/11 happened but it was really a isolated incident (they only hit our shores once 8 years prior... I would call that isolated)... we are giving the terrorists too much credit for their capabilities.

For the past 10 years I have been studying how our ancestors survived in this country before the states existed.
I am part of a historical reenactment group that spends weeks on end living as the mountain man fur trappers did.
Get out of the city and live off the land if you expect to survive.
Get your hands on a smooth bore flint lock and learn how to make black powder and you will never be without a firearm to hunt for food and defend your family.
Between me an my friends we have people that:
Make beer, wine and wiskey.
Make bows and arows.
Weavers
Blacksmiths that make firearms on a forge
Hunters and farmers
Tanners
and many other real life skills.

I am more concerned about our sovereignty. The changes occurring in this country are happening faster in one generation then the last five generations.
Your grandchildren will not have the same freedoms or opportunities you have today. We don't have the same freedoms and opportunity our parents had either.
Keep your eye on the ball our elected officials are thinking you are not paying attention to.

Government help? I think the continuous downward spiral our government is taking is more of a threat to our immediate survival. I think I'd be better flying solo than with the "help" of the government.

Very little. I cannot afford a bunker out in the country.
What would you suggest, John? Gold bullion buried in an old well?
