What government runs on self-reliance and self-confidence much less social programs? Please enlighten us with another ad hoc-strawman fantasy.

Dependence. It's from the European model where the subjects existed in a dependent role under a relatively and variably benevolent monarch or feudal system. In exchange for a certain parental role by the 'King', the people were subservient. The people existed for the King rather than the other way around. You still see this in the nature of societies in Europe and Australia if you've ever lived there as I have. People came to America, in large part, to escape that form of society because of the constraints it put on them. But since the 60's we've seen a move back toward that dependency and it's weakened our nation and society. We're far less independent, far less self reliant, far less personal responsibility and we look to government for much of our sustenance. The more like Europe America is, the weaker it is.

They don't build, they destroy opportunity and encourage complacency with a lifestyle that encourages the least amount of work for a sustainable life.

There are times when self reliance is not going to cut it so in developed nations we put up safety nets so we don't have huge numbers of people starving in the streets, unable to attend school, without health care, and with out much hope of ever pulling out of there mess. If you do not want social programs you are welcome to move any number of nations in the developing world.

Dependency, lack of initiative, lack of connection to society and lack responsibilities for society, ongoing poverty, crime, teen pregnancy, dependency, public housing, (catching breath) crime, drug and alcohol abuse, crime, lack of self-worth and um, crime.
