Did the law ever come in England, that every where had to have easy access for wheel chairs and disabled. Only our local bus has two high steps up, three counting the first step onto the bus. I'm having trouble when coming back from shopping with a trolly when it's full, but also notice what a job some old people have of getting on and off the bus. There is no way a wheel chair person could get on.

The buses in the UK are not all fitted with disabled access. Most big towns and cities do have them but not little towns. As for travelling by train if you are a wheelchair user.....that can be quite traumatic if you don't telephone the station you are leaving from and going to first before you travel! There is a ramp available on some trains and stations but we've found not all of them are equipped. When you do finally get onto a train you then have the indignity of having to travel in the luggage/parcels carriage!! We once did not do the phone calls for the return journey and had such a traumatic time that it made us both ill! In our area in the East Yorkshire area there are a lot of taxis that are especially designed for wheelchair users but not everyone can afford to travel long distances by taxi. This country needs to get up-to-date with disabled access/public transport etc., and goodness only knows what tourists from overseas think when they come here on holiday!!! xxx

I'm sorry to learn of this. Especially since England used to be my home, and I thought it was more progressive than most other countries in this respect.

Our little town in northern Canada, has buses equipped to take wheelchairs and those with walking problems, including OAPs. Petitions were circulated and signed by many, and then presented to the mayor and town council.

If you can get others to co-operate and a petition drawn up, perhaps you can do the same. After all, each of has a vote. Let your council know this. And the best of luck!

I don't know about the law in England but you can come on over to the USA for a visit. We have wheelchair accessible ramps/slanted curbs at most every business place, government offices, schools and many street corners. Public transportation (big van or bus, train, trolley) is wheelchair accessible in my community and in several places I have visited.

England doesn't have chair lift buses? Here in the US the buses regular steps lower and raise and also can accomodate wheel chairs pursuant to national legislation requiring access for persons with disabilities.

The buses in my town do have the ramp for wheelchairs on most of the roots. Trains are not so advanced I believe you have to get a porter to help.Laws have been passed about accesss for disabled people but all public places and modes of transport were given so many years before it becomes compulsory.

In Toronto and the GTA, our busses lower the door down to sidewalk level and now they have an area on the outside of the bus for people who want to store their bicycle if they need to. They are trying to encourage more people to take public transit. You should approach your City Hall and find out why you don't have it yet.
