When I was a child in California, we had two full weeks off, and Christmas was always timed so it was somewhere in the middle of that vacation, so we had PLENTY of time to shop an get ready for a wonderful time. My parents were of German extraction and so Christmas Eve was our big day to celebrate. While other kids got to open a present on Christmas Eve, my sister and I got to open a present on the day before Christmas Eve! Mom prepared a turkey or a ham and all the trimmings, and we got to help, and also spend some time with Dad, who didn't get a lot of time off. Around six o'clock we would have our meal, and then open the presents. We were on the phone right away thanking our friends for their presents while they might be singing carols around their pianos. It actually worked better because we weren't all doing the same thing at the same time. I remember it as magical doing all this in the twinkling lights of the evening. Then, we might go to church. The next morning, Santa had arrived! I LOVED it!
As an adult, however, I was living in New Jersey and had to commute to work, and, of course, had to work on Christmas Eve. My husband and I wouldn't get home till our usual time of 7:30pm. Things had to change. We were exhausted and didn't have the energy to have a big meal. So, remembering how much we love to eat cheese and bread, we decided to gather a bunch of our favorite cheeses and breads (and fondue!and simply curl up and watch Christmas shows on tv..My husband's family is Swiss, so we called it "La Nuit du Fromage" (I am not sure the Swiss would like this!) but we had a wonderful, relaxing time, and have never felt pressed to push ourselves to have a big meal. Occasionally, when Christmas falls on a weekend we will do the turkey/had meal, but in either case, we are making it work for us. It feels like a long tradition for us since we are celebrating with foods from Switzerland. We recommend it to anyone who wants a simple way to celebrate that won't leave you feeling more exhausted than when you started.

Our family always gets together on Christmas Eve for a big dinner and we exchange presents. My kids love it because on Christmas Eve morning before anyone arrives they are allowed to pick 1 gift from under the tree and open it (this is why the really expensive items are from Santa and hidden away till X-mas morning, even though my kids are way beyond believing in Santa lol) Big breakfast, family, laughter. It is our time to catch up with family and create new memories.

When I was growing up, Christmas Eve was the "big event" - the whole family got together and we did the big dinner thing and opened all the gifts from family members that night.
Now, our "holiday season" is a lot busier - with several different events going on for a few weeks. But December 24 is still the night that the kids open their gifts from my family... and of course, putting out milk and cookies (or something to that effect) for Santa.

My family gets together and has a gift exchange and a huge dinner. We have a turkey, a ham, mashed potatoes and stuffing, the works. I usually end up sledding with my younger cousins down my aunt's hills in the back yard and also I love to watch 24 hours of A Christmas Story (just not the whole 24 hours). We finish off the night with spiked hot cocoa and egg nog and bourbon. I love this time because we get the whole family together and just have a great time.

On Christmas Eve we always go carolling with the church. Then we have our evening church service, which my parents usually run because my dad is the pastor and my mum is in charge of music. We usually will get home at 12-1 in the morning. Me and my 2 little sister always sleep in the same room on Christmas Eve.

On Christmas Eve we go to my mother in laws house and open gifts and then after we are finished exchanging gifts there, then we go to my father in laws house and do the same there. On Christmas day we go to someone on my side fo the familys house and we eat lunch, exchange gifts, eat some more, pack up left overs and eat turkey for the next week or so. Then we go home and play with all of our goodies.
Have fun!

My wife and I stay home on Christmas Eve and Christmas. We prepare the Christmas Eve dinner by candlelight and have it around 7pm. After the dishes are clean, we wait until midnight to open our gifts. Then in the morning, we get up whenever we like and enjoy the day play with our toys.

I like to take it easy on Christmas Eve. I prefer to stay home and listen to music, watch the different specials and movies. Then I go to Midnight Mass before coming home to enjoy a post-mass meal before falling asleep.
I also tend to have the fireplace going as soon as it's nightfall to add to the overall Christmas Eve feeling.
Sometimes I go shopping on Christmas Eve just to see if there's any last minute gifts I could add to the gifts I've already purchased.
