I imagine your dad has a Hi-Fi unithe can plug a turntable into, almost all turntables will require plugging into an amplifier, and almost all amps & turntable use standard stereo line-in connectors. Iwill give a link to turntable that hasit's own in-built speakers if this isn;t the case.

The best/cheapest turntable is about £40 from amazon -

You can also get one that has a USB output so you can convert your vinyl to digital files for burning to CD or just digitally backing them up to your computer. These are about £80 -

Portable - has the advantage of being able to run off batteries and mains, has an inbuilt speaker so you don't needto plug into an amp. -

At least one company makes a turntable that has a built-in preamp so you can plug it into amps that don't have phono inputs and also has USB output so that the music is digitized and can go directly into a computer. You can burn the records onto CDs, import the music into iTunes or whatever you wish.

The cheapest decent record turntable you can buy is the award winning Pro-Ject Debut III. It retails for around £100.

Some companies do offer turntables cheaper than that, but the sound and build quality is appalling.

You should pick one up quite reasonably.

Maybe a better idea for your dad would be to convert his vinyl records into MP3s and burn them onto CDs. It's quite an easy thing to do.

i got my dad one a couple of years ago. you dont have to know any thing about them as theyre all the same really. as long as they play 45's and 33's its a winner. record players are not that technical.
