A couple things, The fact that some African Americans will always stand up for other African Americans only because they are black. You see it all the time, with OJ, with Barry Bonds, even on NFL football i have noticed the African American broadcasters always root for the team with the African American quarterback. Secondly alot of African American refuse to assimilate into the American culture for fear of coming off as "white", instead of admitting that they were wrong, they claim that they did a certain thing because they were entitled to do it that way because they are black ( look at Isaiah Thomas he said it was all right for him to talk that way to women because he was black and that if a white person spoke that way it would be wrong). Also affirmative action has hurt African Americans alot, it makes it to easy for people to undermine African Americans accomplishments by simply saying ya he only got there because affirmative action. I'M sure some people will construe what i have said as being racist I feel that these things have hurt African Americans as a whole.

Very interesting question. I will be watching to see what you choose as the Best Answer. I would think that racism would be the number one problem for "African-Americans".

The "Sponsored Results" that Yahoo Advertising gave me show a part of the problem.

The American culture in general. When people are poor for a long time, and not just black people but all races, they have a tendency to think that's just the way it's always going to be and give up trying to have it any other way. It becomes a cycle of making excuses and blaming other people. I grew up in a small town with a huge population of poor white people, and all they did was make excuses for why they don't succeed or try. The system isn't made for success, it's made to keep the middle class aware and threatened of the lower class so that they upper class can control voting patterns.

I think that some African American community leaders hurt the people by continuing the idea that the 'black man' is so repressed. I think equal opportunity abounds but if people restrict them selves with a limiting belief system they will be repressed. But not by the evil 'white man' but by their own perceived fears and the continuous mantra of their leaders.

Rap and other degrading songs and images.

Bill Cosby was on Oprah last night and he was talking about minorities and education and how parents today aren't doing their job. He was saying that parents today just buy their children things instead of taking an interest in what they are doing. They just continue the pattern that they see going on around them. They succumb to the stereotypes instead of rising above them. Bill Cosby and a friend of his wrote a book it's called "Come On People" It seems to be really good. I'm going to check it out, maybe we all should.

AIDS, music about drugs, the game, and alcohol do it the most. Because of this racism is throw at us. The fact is that we are (black people) STATISTICALLY the slowest race on Earth. In other words we focus more so on what's now instead of focusing on what to do. This is also the reason that the countries of Africa are not so technologically advanced as other countries. Now I am black and I'm not saying every black person is ignorant but sadly most of us are. If we actually put some effort into changing we might but for right now it's struggling in world to survive.

African-Americans

Because just like any other skin tone, many are like a bunch of crabs in a barrel. When one tries to succeed, the others pull him/her back down in the muck

By the way, I hate that title. They are americans...

You are about to get alot of racist answers. Anyway, black people dont understand that they are the hebrew israelites written about in the bible. Deuteronomy 28 and Leviticus give the curses that were placed on these people every curse is similar to what black people have gone through all throughout history. Black people need to take responsibility for their communities and stop depending on the government and other people. Most of all what we need to do is return to the Most High.
Most people may not believe this but its true, so your opinions dont matter. There are plenty of facts to back this up and hardly any to back up the clain that "jews" are the chosen people of "God". We hurt our selves by going against what is written. Wake up Israel.
