Like every other creature, including humans, they have a purpose. That purpose is to be born, survive, procreate and then die. Our purpose is exactly the same, to make sure our species survives.

According to Douglas Adam's "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy", humans believe they are more intelligent than whales because whales like to muck about in the water having a great time, and whales believe they are more intelligent than humans for precisely the same reason.
Whales are merely a type of mammal that has found a niche as an aquatic-dwelling animal type, some of which are carnivorous, some of which are filter feeders. Their purpose is to eat well, produce fertile offspring, and muck about in the water having a great time.

Of course they do spend a lot of time out at sea, and hours submerged, and despite the fact they're mammals they're far too snooty to come on land...oh my god! I just realised, they're conspiring against us!
