I need to write an essay about drinking age. And why it is such a problem in America. And why is there a certain age we put on it. And why is it different from the age for buying cigarettes. And does the drinking age affect the amount of teen parties and underage drinking? I need any opinion possible on this subject!

Our drinking age is 21. That is ludicrous. I had a friend who was married, with two little girls, and served in the armed forces. He also was in a band that played in bars, but he was too "imature" to have a drink with his wife there. She could drink legally because she was 24. But he was only 20, just an immature punk kid who could not be trusted to make his own decisions in life.

Oh, he didn't own his own home outright, but he had a mortage.

As for underage DUI, I think the license of anyone should be revoked for a minimum of 3 years on a first offense. We don't need lower limits, we just need good enforcement of the current laws. Alcohol occurs naturally in your stomach. It is possible to get too carried away with lower BAC limits.

In europe and elsewhere people can drink in public by age 16. That is probably about the right age. Remove the prohibition, and you do a lot to remove the allure.

The reason teens host keggers out in the woods is because they cannot legally drink in bars. This prohibition actually encourages intoxicated driving among the youth. But then, there's nothing like prohibition to make busy bodies feel good about themselves.

The drinking age was set at 21 nationwide back in the '80's. Prior to that time, it was a state by state matter. The objective was to try to control teen drinking, but as with most prohibitions, it is only marginally effective. There were teen parties and underage drinking before the standard age was set. 18 has generally been the age limit for tobacco products as long as they have been regulated. The drinking age is primarily a problem for those under 21. They can and do vote, but it takes quite a while to change a law and by the time most teenagers get around to attempting any political action, they are already old enough to drink and it is no longer an issue for them.
