I know that over time some traditions and symbols lose power of meaning.

No. I don't know if it ever was held in high regard. Lots of people have claddagh rings, just because they're a nice piece of jewellery. They don't take the symbolic thing seriously. I've never seen it used as a wedding ring here, but I presume some people do use it.

I know it's still the traditional wedding ring. My husband and I use them as wedding rings, and we are just Americans of Irish decent. I got mocked by someone who is ACTUALLY from Ireland once when I said that I'm Irish too. He said, "you aren't Irish. You are an American. " I told him, "I'm not an American. Americans get to own Casinos. I'm just a 13th generation foreigner."

So, after my family being here since the late 1600s, we still hold Irish tradtions in high regard.
