Is it normal to spend 4 hours an night doing "homework" for 3 classes? Basic Programmin, College level Algebra, and Technical Writing. These are online, 3rd year classes. He makes A's and is very smart. I feel like he spends WAY too much unneccessary time on homework, then has no time to do anything with me...he somehow manages to do what HE wants though...

As for not being supportive. I sit at home and wait for him while he is on deployment. I do his laundry, cook his meals, clean his house, and work full-time to pay half the rent and utilities. So screw you.

Be thankful that he is so motivated. Rather have that than a slacker.

I suspect that the programming and technical writing classes come with plenty of assignments that suck up time -- such as writing code or writing tech specs.

3 classes is 9 semester hours. 4 hours a night for 5 days is 20 hours. 9 semester hours should require about 18 hours of study out of class. 20 isn't unreasonable, especially for classes that have a lot of writing to do. Online classes require even more time because they are very reading and writing intensive.

You write "I feel like he spends WAY too much unneccessary time on homework, then has no time to do anything with me...he somehow manages to do what HE wants though..."

"I feel...." is this really your decision to make?
"do what HE wants..." so it's really all about you feel neglected and want some more of his time?

What you're writing isn't about him - it's about you. Think about that and then talk with him.

When I was in college, the professors said the general rule of thumb for time spent on homework or studying should be 2 hours for every hour that you are in class so he is studying for a normal amount of time. His homework should be important and if you can't see that, then you should find someone new.

There is no real "normal" when it comes to something like that because what works for one person may not work for someone else. If he is finding time to do what he wants and not what you can do together, I would find someone else though, It is also a statistic that many who finish college, online or off, change their lifestyles when they are in the field doing what they have been studying for so relationship which begin when one of the partners are in school have a high rate of failure - something like 80% failure rate in law and medicine - so unless he makes time for you I would indeed find someone who does and move on.

ideally, students needs 2 hours to study/to do the homework for every 1 hour they take in class.

4 hours of doing 3 classes home works is VERY NORMAL.

Those classes sound pretty easy to me, but everyone is different. I never study in college except right before the test and only for a few hours and I get A's and B's. However, just because that works for me doesn't me it will work for him.

Give him a break. Maybe he really needs to do well in college to go on to grad school or something. He's doing the right thing in life, leave him alone. In fact, maybe he should dump you because you don't sound too supportive.

For college the general rule of thumb is for every hour of class you can expect to spend at least 2 hours reading/studying.
