All the employees are on salary ... they don't get paid for overtime.

Well, the high achievers often put in an extra 10 hours a week....

My co-worker, who works the bare minimum, actually says to them, "If you were to take your salary and divide it by the number of hours that you work, it would be equivalent to a McDonald's working wage".

Have you ever heard of someone doing this?

well, it obviously wouldn't work for everyone - only people with the lowest salary - IF they work tons of unpaid overtime - 10 hrs a week OT would convert anyone to that unless they only made 20,000 and quite possibly if they made that little - they could be incorrectly classified as a salaried person and might be due OT pay if you looked into it with your state labor dept. MANY low level positions are NOT ALLOWED to be exempt from overtime, especially if they pay blow $25k/yr. I worked for a company that lost a case like that with some help desk personnel, who were salaried-and make decent money anyway ($25-30k+ / 10+ yrs ago), but worked more than 40 hrs due to being on call on weekends - We had to pay them back wages, because they were incorrectly classified as salary exempt employees - check it out

When you agree to a salaried position you need to make sure that you are being compensated fairly for the hours that you are expected to work. Whats the point of being a high achiever if your employer wont pay you higher wages. Your time is worth a certain amount for each hour that you work. You are selling your talent short if you are working long hours and getting minimal pay. Employers sit back and chuckle when they can get dedicated employees to work long hours with no extra compensation. It saves them lots of money. Quit being taken advantage of and get a job that pays you what you are worth.

It's sometimes like that with salaried positions.

You still have to get overtime for overtime work. Who's your employer?
