Who told you that you need to connect both cables? They are wrong.

You do not want to connect both a VGA and a DVI cable to one system at the same time. Your system will see this as dual monitors and then extend your desktop across the VGA connection and the DVI connection.

To use the DVI connector you need a system or video card that has a DVI output. This will generally give you a better picture than the VGA connection. Video cards with DVI connectors are reasonably cheap (for low power graphics chips) and readily available.

Why purchase an adapter and waste money on account which you will nevertheless finally end up with a similar analog VGA demonstrate you have with the VGA cable. Its the video card that makes it DVI no longer the cable and in case you want digital purchase a DVI video card.

Digital Video Input (DVI) is a better resolution than VGA can support. Both cables don't have to be connected for you monitor to work. Choose either DVI or VGA. I'd go with DVI and don't go the route that I did for a while which was to buy a DVI to VGA adapter - it really makes the screen look crappy.
