1. Write a balanced equation for the formation of carbon monoxide (CO) from the elements of carbon, C, and oxygen, O2.

2. Calculate the percentage of sulfur, by weight, in sulfur trioxide, SO3.

3. A gas is contained in a balloon with a volume of 35 L at a temperature of 30 degrees C. What temperature must be reached in order for the balloon to expand to a volume of 50 L, at constant pressure?

1. 2C + O2 ===> 2CO

2. Atomic weights: S=32 O=16 SO3=80

32/80 x 100% = 40%

48/80 x 100% = 60% (48 is the weight of three O's.)

3. V1/T1 = V2/T2

T2 = V2T1/V1

T1 = 30C = 303K

T2 = (50L)(303K)/(35L) = 433K

433K - 273K = 160C
