the idea of the matter to be composed of small particles, a building blocks if you will, was originally proposed by ancient Greeks. Or at lest based on our knowledge of ancient history.
Dalton however went further by using quantitative measuring came up with an idea of an element and saying that each element has its own particular atom.

so on the second thought it really is C!

like in "atoms are the smallest particle of an element".
