The first Police Force in the world, was The Peelers in London. Founded by Prime Minister Robert Peel. Many of them, the very original policemen anywhere in the whole wide world, had beards because beards were commonplace in those days. This was in the early 1800's

Moosie above is wrong, Beardy was the first recognised bearded policeman when appearance was a factor. Many Peelers had beards

The first recognised police force in the UK was the Royal lrish Constabulary which was formed by Robert Peel in 1812.
The Metropolitan Police wasn't formed until 1829.
Also further to this in 1826 the Stockton and Darlington railway had a recognised Police department, a full 3 years before the Met were formed.
So the oldest police force was the Royal Irish Constabulary followed by the British Transport Police which has it's origins from the Stockton and Darlington railway and then the Met Police.

And as for PC Beardy in 1882 as someone mentioned here, One of my ancesters is William Meer who was a policeman on the Bristol and Exeter railway in the 1840's

As said above, the first official police force was founded by Robert Peel in the 1800's. From this you get the english slang words for policemen Bobbies and Peelers. They were permitted beards.

Must have been one of the early pre-christian religious watchdogs.

Maybe something like:
" You shameful lackey, who told you that you could stay in bed whilst the Sungod is rising from his slumbers?"

Beards were very much the norm. in early times as shaving was positively harmful, until the Romans took to it.

Or are you referring to civilian policemen in UK?
