This is a wonderful poem. I don't know the author. They are making many statements here.

The primary theme is "complacency". They say that it is better to remain a child than to ponder things beyond ordinary comprehension.

The ending is bizarre. I think they simply mean to tell us that they are clairvoyant...able to see into the future.

Overall, the message is about each persons decision to seek comfort or knowledge.

Just my opinion.

Concentrate on the notions of innocence and of story-telling, I mean, the capacity for kids of creating stories and disasters. There are two levels in the poem: that of reality (real disasters, way above the level of children) and that of fiction (that created by children when they play).
Nick Flynn: he wrote a wonderful book (if that is the Nick Flynn I am thinking about), the title of which would probably be censored here, Another Bullsh!t Night in Suck City. A very tragic book about his father becoming homeless in Boston. A must read, with great prose and poetic passages as well.
