Gordon Brown today , deflecting the question of why he won't hold a referendum on the European treaty content (Because he would lose it) said that the polls show people of the UK are interested in the NHS, education and good public services. True Mr. Brown and holding a referendum on the European Treaty content. You missed that one out.

I wonder how many people would actually vote if there was in fact an unnecessary referendum on this matter. I suspect very few. I share your view Harriet that Europe is an important view but fear that attempts to hold a referendum on the TREATY (not Constitution) would be hijacked by the rent-a-crowd people who would seize on the opportunity to put forward the out-of-date view that Britain could somehow exist without being positively involved in shaping the future of Europe. They are after all the same people who suggest that we shouldn't have a close relationship with the US - or anyone else come to think about it. So...it'll be us against the rest of the world. Is that really an option. Even if my worse case scenario doesn't come about...there will be other treaties, other constitutions and so on and so on. Any history book will tell you....xx Oh...an intention is neither a pledge OR a promise.

By this very act of betrayal Gordon Brown proves that nothing has changed since he took over from that other
liar-come-traitor, Tony Blair.

It's a promise until they get into power at which point it becomes expedient to forget it or claim that they meant something else entirely
