The plants have a lot of leaves without fruit at all, what did I do wrong? The frost is going to show up soon and they will die when the frost hit California...

You might have started them too late. Tomato plants (like most fruit-bearing plants) key off the amount of light they get each day to determine the growing and blooming phases. I spring, the days are getting longer and we head toward the summer solstice. If the plants detect the sun being out longer each day, they grow leaves and branches.

After summer solstice, the days begin to get shorter. And this triggers the bloom phase of the plant.

If you plant a tomato too late, it doesn't detect the change in daily daylight (it needs to see an increase for a while and then a decrease). So, it gets confused (for lack of a better word), and just grows leaves and branches without producing blooms until it's too cold to grow any more.

Tomatos need a lot of water. Also buy a bottle of tomato feed
it is not dear.Follow the instructions on the bottle.
Make sure the plants are in the sun. If it gets too hot spray them with water several times a day.
Good luck next year
