Golden Slumbers

I've never really liked Savoy Truffle.

I like Golden Slumbers. When it is paired with those other songs on the the second side of the second Vinyl record of Abbey Road, it is the Beatles at their best. Savoy Truffle? Well, I cant even recall that song right now.

These are two very different songs. Savoy Truffle is more rockin and Harrison wrote it. Lennon/McCartney wrote the ballad Golden Slumbers. Abbey Road is my fave album but I would have to say I like Savoy Truffle better.

"Golden Slumbers" was already a well-known song long before The Beatles recorded it. When he was a child, Paul McCartney saw a music book on a piano that was opened to this song. He couldn't read the music so he made up his own melody for it. It became part of the medley that dominated side 2 of their last regular studio album "Abbey Road". All those bits and pieces were unfinished songs written by various members of the group. Paul got the songs and worked out a way to link them together. Originally, what turned out to be the last song, "Her Majesty" came right in between "Mean Mr. Mustard" and "Polythene Pam". Upon hearing a playback, Paul didn't like it and asked for the song to be edited out. The sound engineer recycled the song to the end of the tape so it wouldn't be lost. It was a crude edit. You can hear the end of "Mean Mr. Mustard" at the beginning of "Her Majesty" and the last chord for "Her Majesty" starting "Polythene Pam". Apparently, someone decided to release the album as it was and nobody really seemed to think anything of it because The Beatles were known to use such unusual gimmicks like these on their other albums.

Golden Slumbers

In my opinion, Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End is the best 5 minutes of music The Beatles ever made.

Savoy Truffle is good song though. It is supposedly about Eric Clapton's habit of eating chocolates, even though his teeth were bad and it caused him a lot of pain.
