I have a 2001 Jetta wagon. The engine has seized and mechanics tell us that we may be looking at $7000 in repairs. We still owe about $7000 on the car. Any suggestions?

Which mechanics told you this?

A privately rebuilt engine typically costs $2000-$3000, and you might spend another $500 for installation. You could also try and find a junkyard motor, which would cost a lot less.

$7000 is outrageous!

The only time that matters is when you wreck the car and have to deal with the insurance company because they only pay book value. I would think the engine should be about 4500 dollars. Maybe you can find a used one. If it were me I would replace the engine, remove all the insurance but liability and drive carefully. In fact that is what I do. I just spent 3000 on a car that is worth about 4000 for a transmission. I have no insurance and drive it to work everyday. It is still cheaper than payments on a new car.

Seems a bit high for a replacement engine. Call around to a few more shops for a quote. Should be Able to get a rebuilt with a guarantee installed for about $3,000 tops. either way you will be out $$, but if car is in good shape otherwise you will at least know you have a good vehicle if you decide to rebuild. Even a good used car will cost about $10,000 and you will not be sure how good it will be. the only other option would be to call around to a auto wrecker for a low mileage used engine, but these can be a gamble.

How can you still owe $7000? was that car worth $7000 in 2001? Looks like you have no choice but to get it fixed.

See another mechanic for a second estimate - tell them you want to use a rebuilt motor.

If there is a local trade school nearby, call and ask if they'd be willing to take on the job.

Your local dealer will be glad to trade you out of it but they'll add the balance remaining to the new loan.

Good luck.

If the car is still in good shape I would go to the junkyard and find another motor or get a rebuilt one, that mechanic who told you $7,000 is full of you know what, don't go back there.

there is no way a rebuilt motor installed could cost over $3000...run away from what ever shop told you $7000..
never go there again for any reason they are criminals

Definitely try to get the repair costs down.

If you decide to get rid of it, you'd probably make more money parting it out than selling it whole. Just an idea to reduce your losses.
