The osu mascot brutus the buckeye has a head that resembles the nut of a the Ohio Buckeye tree, the state tree of Ohio. The nut is inedible due to high quatities of tanin which make it impossible for humans to digest, but can be used to tan hide into leather. The nut is said to resemble the eye of a Buck deer, it is also the model for a penut butter and chocolate treat, and is said to be good luck.
In addition to John Cooper carrying one, the wife of Florida coach Urban Myer is said to carry one.

Its a poisonous nut from the Buckeye tree found in Ohio. It was rumored that John Cooper, head football coach 1988-2000, would carry one in his pockets for good luck. What good was it against Michigan going 2-10-1 and a 6-6 bowl record?

A buckeye is a nut found on buckeye trees that are all around the midwest, especially in the state of OHIO. Brutus the Buckeye is basically a big buckeye nut made to look like a face with a body underneath it. An might I say, the Buckeyes are probably the most original mascot in the country. They are lots of colleges you can go to be a tiger, bear, bulldog...but only one place that you can be a BUCKEYE!!! Go BUCKS
Oh, ever get a chance to eat candy buckeyes, they are delicous.

Its called a buckeye. Basically its what they call in the north a useless nut. You can't eat it and you really can't do anything with it. I'm not really sure why Ohio State adopted that as its mascot but hey its their team.

a buckeye it is a nut. to the people who have answered it is a tree you are incorrect it is a nut that grows on the tree. it might be called a buckeye tree or something but their mascot is not a tree it is the nut that grows on the tree.
