How do you determine a device name when using unix?
I'm trying to extract some files with the command

cpio -idmv
But I don't know the device name. The drive (exabyte exb-8500) is an optical drive (like a cd rom) connected to
scsi scusi card.I'm trying to extract from a 8mm tapes.

When I use the command (Which works with my dds-4 tapes
using a diffrent machine-hp,dat40) cpio -idmv please help..how do I get the device name? how Do I even set permissions to that device if I can't see it?

try the command
mt status
