I have this same question. I have been doing my own research for months now, and am sad to say that it is too late for my 5 year old and my 9 month old. The original thought was the MMR caused Autism, and depending on who you talk to, most believe with 100% that it does or does not. There was a mercury based agent in the MMR that has since been removed, but the hype is still out there.
That being said, if you check out what is actually in the immunizations, you would be horrified. I hate reading these long responses, but I believe this is worth it:
Ammonium Sulfate
Suspected gastrointestinal, liver, nerve and respiratory system poison.
Beta-propilactone
Known to cause cancer, suspected gastrointestinal, liver, respiratory, skin and sense organ poison
Genetically modified yeast, animal, bacterial and viral DNA
Can be incorporated into the recipient's DNA and cause genetic mutations.
Latex Rubber
Can cause life-threatening allergic reactions
Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
Being studdied for mutagenic, teratogenic (developmental malformation and monstrosities) and reproductive effects. A neurotoxinAllergic reactions range from mild to severe.
Aluminum
Implicated as a cause of brain damage, suspected factor in alzeheimers, dementia, seizures and comas. Allergic reactions can occur on skin.
Formaldehyde
Major constituent of embalming fluid; poisonous if ingested. Probable carcinogen; suspected gastrointestinal, liver, immune system, nerve, reproductive system and respiratory poison. Linked to lukemia, brain, colon and lymphatic cancers. (So toxic that when working with it, you must have your face covered so you dont breathe in too many of the fumes... and we're injecting ourselves with it.)
Micro-Organisms
Live and killed viri and bacteria or their toxins. The polio vaccine was contaminated with a monkey virus now turning up in human bone, lung lining, brain tumors and lymphomas.
Polysorbate 80
Known to cause cancer in animals
Tri(n)butylphosphate
Suspected nerve and kidney poison
Glutaraldehyde
Poisonous if injected. Causes birth defects in experimental animals
Gelatin
Produced from pieces of calf and cattle skins, de-minerialized cattle bones and pork skin. Allergic reactions have been reported.
Gentamicin sulfate and polymyxin B
Allergic reactions can range from mild to life threatening.
Mercury (Thimerosal)
One of the most poisonous substances known. Has an affinity for the brain, gut, liver, bone-marrow and kidneys. Minute amounts can cause nerve damage. Symptoms of mercury toxocity are similar to those of autism.
Neomycin Sulfate
Interferes with Vitamin B6 absorption. An error in the update of B6 can cause a form of epilepsy and mental retardation. Allergic reactions can be mild to life-threatening.
Phenol / phenoxyethanol (2-pe)
Used as an antifreeze. Toxic to all cells and cabable of disabling the immune system's primary response mechanism.
Human and animal cells
Human cells from aborted fetal tissue and human albumin. Pig blood, horse blood, rabbit brain, guinea pig, dog kidney, cow heart, monkey kidney, chick embryo, chicken egg, duck egg, calf serum, sheep blood and others.
" A major cause of the roman empire's decline after 6 centuries of world dominance was its replacement of stone aqueducts by lead pipes for the transport and supply of drinking water. Roman engineers, the best in the world, turned their fellow citizens into neurological cripples. Today, our own "best and brightest" with the best of intentions, achieve the same end through childhood vaccination programs yeilding the modern scourges of hyperactivity, learning disabilities, autism, appetite disorders, and impulsive violence."
-Harris L. Coulter, Ph. D
Last, but not least, all those doctors out there STILL insisting vaccinations are safe, check out this website and then tell me what you think.

This is a tough question because it is a very personal decision. First let me say that I feel very strongly on this topic, but, I think every person should make their own choice.
I had my son vaccinated with all his shots on time until he had his 12 month vaccines and had a very bad reaction. I did some research and found that vaccine MAY have negative side affects for some children. I do not believe that there are any scientific proof that vaccines cause autism or any other problems. However, I felt that after my son had such a bad reaction to the 12 month shots that I was going to spread out the remainder of his shots. Some of the information I read suggested that maybe flooding a baby's body with so many vaccines at once may cause a problem. So, at my son's 15 month dr. visit, I only let them give him one of the shots instead of three. At his 18 month visit he'll have another and then he will have his MMR vaccine at 3 or 4 yrs. old. Please, do extensive research before you make YOUR decision. Do not let anyone pressure you one way or another. I truly believe in a mothers instinct. Follow yours and I don't think you can go wrong.

First off, I think a debate is a good idea-- healthy and informative. Anyone who is close-minded on either side is really doing themselves a disservice.
Anti-vaccination websites are not run by a "bunch of kooks" and their studies have not been "completely discredited."
EVEN THE VACCINE COMPANIES THEMSELVES admit that in some rare circumstances vaccines can cause permenent or severe reactions. This can be found in any pro-vaccine pamphlet-- so it definitely should register with you even if you are pro-vaccine.
Much of the difficulty in telling if a vaccine is truly the "wonder vaccine" is that with the implement of vaccines came many other things-- some came into popularity at the same time as sanitation improved- running water, sewage systems, etc-- so certain diseases would have dropped dramatically without the vaccine.
Others are vaccines for Terrible illnesses that are only preventable by use of a vaccine.
I'm still very leery of vaccines but will continue to vaccinate my daughter (she's 5 months and currently on track with all vaccines) until I decide otherwise.
However she will not get the "uneccessary" vaccines like chicken pox, the new earache vaccine, or flu vaccine. These illnesses are not life threatening.

I'm still researching, but thus far, my 4 month old has had his shots on time. Do you remember the measles outbreak a few years ago? That was caused by a group of people who weren't vaccinated for religious reasons. It caused an outbreak in a whole entire state. Then there was the case of the girl who went to Romania and came back with some other type of disease because she wasn't vaccinated. As to all the chemicals being used in the vaccinations, yes most of them are dangerous, but then again, are we not exposed to chemicals on a daily basis? Some of those ingredients are th same as that found in second hand smoke. We cannot eliminate and isolate ourselves from those things completely, unfortunately.
At the moment, I am pro vaccinations, although I might consider spacing them out a bit so my son doesn't get such huge doses of chemicals all at once.

For. I believe that yes, maybe there is a link between certain vaccines and autism, but I do not believe that they are the sole cause.
Vaccines have essentially eradicated a number of formerly devastating, epidemic inducing diseases.
There may be some cases where some children should not have them...Jenny McCarthy herself discusses this in her book about her experience with her son's autism. She herself is not anti-immunization. She believes it was one of the contributing factors, but that there were many others also.
I wholeheartedly agree with her that a screening test should be developed to see which kids can tolerate vaccines (which will be most), and which are at high risk for developing autism.
Unfortunately, we still don't no enough about autism to make that possible yet.
For now, the benefits of vaccines far outweigh the risks for me.
Autism can be devastating for some children - and autism does display in varying degrees...but those diseases can cause much more harm, even death. As one lady posted on here in an answer the other day - I'd rather have an Autistic child than a dead one.

It's a complicated issue. I'm not against vaccines, per se. That would be foolish. Without vaccines we would see the return of a multitude of childhood illnesses that tormented parents and children alike for centuries. It's important for a huge majority of children to be vaccinated in order to maintain a threshold that will protect our children.
However, there are several major things that are wrong right now with our system.
1) Pharmaceutical companies and the government who oversee the mandatory vaccine program are in bed together, which creates a major conflict of interest. MAJOR.
2) Although thimerosal, a mercury based preservative, has been removed from most vaccines, it still lingers, because the government refuses to admit that there's anything wrong with injecting kids with mercury. Who do they recommend the flu shot for the most? Babies, pregnant women, and old people. The most vulnerable to mercury. And flu shots, unless you specifically request a thimerosal free shot, are LOADED with mercury.
3) The list of mandatory vaccines has grown hugely out of proportion. Chicken pox? Hepatitis B? These are hardly mass killers. Some of the newer vaccines they're trying to make mandatory don't even have very good efficacy. The HPV vaccine is only good for 2 of the 8 or so forms of the virus. They need to make more vaccines voluntary, but this would effect big pharma's bottom line.
These are just a few of the issues surrounding vaccines today. Am I against vaccines? No. Am I against the vaccine system as it stands today? You bet I am.
As an additional note, plenty of people will tell you that there are many studies which find no link between thimerosal and autism. It's baloney. All of these studies are epidemiological, full of statistics that are easily manipulated. There is no clinical evidence that there is no link; they simply can't prove it. And proving that there is a link is much harder than proving there isn't one. Scientists are still working on that one, but believe me one day they'll get there.

I am for getting informed and making a decision based of available facts, not fear or the thought that "your doctor knows best" attitude. The vaccination schedule seems overloaded and some vaccinations are more for convenience than necessity, the chicken pox vaccine. You should weigh the risk vs. reward or each one. Is chicken pox that bad? Its main propose is to keep working moms from having to stay home and lose productivity while tending to their sick children. I think even if you plan of getting all vaccines, spread out the shots, getting no more than one at a time as to detrimine, of any, causes a reaction.

I can't outdo rebecca you go girl I love to see that *certain* individuals actually look into these vaccines to see what is in them these are the real listed ingredients you can even visit the vaers website and the cdc site to see all of the horrific side effects I'm totally content with not vaccinating at all at this point I do not question my decision one bit I cannot see how they can claim no ill effects when they never even developed any type of testing to see if vaccines are harming a body can you say toxic levels of metals? some of the ignorance in this world makes me absolutely sick!! How can one ''be running around with a deadly disease''? lol if it is deadly then uhhh hello ... wouldn't they be dead and really they scare many of the immigrants into getting vaxxed before allowing them a green card they actually often times trick them into thinking it is a requirement *so sad* if you're kids are vaxxed don't worry about my kid getting you're kid sick they are vaxxed isn't that what vaxxes are for lol!! vaccinated kids get sick too and sometimes even with the very vpd they are vaxxed against!! probably by the time our kids have kids there will be a vaccine for bedwetting lol or crying hahahaha!!!

Me, my sisters and my brothers were vaccinated and so was my mother and her 5 siblings. We are all fine! My son has been vaccinated and will continue with the schedule. There are some things out there that is plum scary and why not protect your baby from it. I need more concrete information on it other than (monkey blood, pig skin etc....) That sound like a hoax and it is very unbelievable. If you want to have your baby vaccinated then do it. as for letting people scare you out of it then....
Please weigh your options and speak to a professional before you make your decision on whether you will or won't.

I am a new mom of a 1 year old baby who has received all of his shots on time. I will continue to give him vaccinations because I feel it is important to protect him from already proven deadly diseases.
I appreciate the list of ingredients that the one answerer provided, but when I read it, I think about several things. 1 - if you really knew what was in the processed foods we ate, you wouldn't eat them... if you really knew what was in baby formula, you wouldn't give it to your baby... and if you knew how deadly second hand smoke actually is, you'd build an igloo around your house so no smoke could get in.
I guess I'm just saying that even though the ingredients sound horrible - obviously the vaccinations are working...

I'll let you know after I get the results of my 21 month old son's autism evaluation next week.
:(
The FDA is finally agreeing to do research on the correlation between the vaccinations and autism. Thank god.
