MyBig...it makes a difference if your a neurotic mother who is overly concerned with every developmental stage that children go though. LOL. Admittedly, the knitting is more for my pleasure but we're a big time 4H family. I'm the rabbit, poultry, AND cavy leader for our local club so we've got a small zoo but I like the way you think!

Boys wear knitted things. Sweaters are really nice. Mittens are good for the 2.5 year old.Your husband is just a grown up boy and it would be nice to knit him a sweater, socks or blanket as well. The boys would probably love to have something to match their dad. Depending on when you start your project, you may want to get the guys all matched up and dressed up for the holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. You could even begin a family tradition of it. Lots of love and God bless you on your project idea.

Afghans or blankets take a while to do and they are used by both sexes. You can start off really easy and learn more complicated stitches as you progress. They are great for everyone and you can also give them as gifts or donate. You can do other projects that are for girls and give them as gifts to girls in your family or donate them to families in need. Just because your boys might not use some of the items you might learn to do doesn't mean someone else can't use them. There are shelters and retirement homes and churches that would gladly take donations of nice gifts like that.

Hats, scarves and mittens are always appreciated, even by boys. Throws and afghans are fun if you like a nice longterm project that you can carry with you everywhere. My mother spent a summer knitting knitting me a beautiful lighthouse throw that is much nicer than anything I could have found in a store, and it doesn't look like a granny blanket, either.
Dish scrubbies are a good quick project and they are very useful.

There are many things you can crochet for boys. There are some basic patterns for slippers (use puffy paint on bottom to prevent slipping, hats (ski caps), mittens, scarves. Well if you are in the cold climate.
Boys wear sweaters, and play with teddy bears. And little boys love to snuggle up with a blanket made just for them the same as girls. Just use their favorite colors or their favorite team colors and they will love it.

You should knit or crochet baby blankets for children in the hospital or for orphaned children. You get to knit and help at the same time!

There is such a wide range of things you could make for boys - blankets for their beds, sweaters, hats, mittens, socks - the list goes on and on...... Just make sure it is in a fiber the boys like (let them pick it out)!!!
Good luck and happy knitting.....

I crocheted blankets for all my kids (2 girls, 1 boy). Since afghans are big projects, it took a while.

Blankets/afghans are always good beginner projects. You could always just make something for yourself if you want to make an article of clothing.
