Keeping salt water fish is no different than keeping fresh water fish. Is it cruel? Overall no, that is as long as it is done right.

With keeping fish you just have to be smart about it if you want the fish to have a nice life. For example you do not want to throw a ton of fish into a tiny tank. There are also species of fish that do not house well together be it due to fighting or predation.... and so on and so forth.

Like I said, no it is not cruel as long as you do it right. If you really want a nice tank just make sure the fish you have will get along, that the water quality is good/clean, that they have shelter and live plants are always nice.

I'd say the cruel part is the find out where these fish originally came from. When "Finding Nemo" became a big hit, there was a definite run on clown fish and a resultant bit of wild poaching involved. I seriously doubt anyone ever had a fish tank cuz it was good for the fish. It's all about what we want from the experience. But of course you can treat them with the utmost of kindness and they can live a very healthy and safe life.

Fish will adapt to the space they have available to them, although their growth may be at a stand-still if they do not have enough room to do so. A good rule of thumb is 1" of fish per gallon, although this doesn't mean you can put a 10"a fish in a 10 gallon tank...you are not being cruel. Just be smart!

I doubt that it is cruel to have salt water fish in your aquarium, after all people love to go the the big ones. I have a sister in law that as a school teacher used to take her class to the ocean in Calif. They would gather fish and other water life and keep them in the one in her classroom. The class not only enjoyed their trips, but learned a lot about the environment, how sea life depends on each other and how we in turn can make sure our descendants are able to enjoy them as well.
