Quit is to end. As in "I quit."

"Quite" is correct. When the vowel "i" is followed by a single consonant (t) and then a slient "e," the letter "i" makes the "eye" sound. Without the silent "e" at the end, the "i" would be pronounced like the "i" in "ick" or "igloo."
