Paved Paradise
Big Yellow Taxi ~ Joni Mitchell
http://www.lyricsfreak.com/j/joni+mitchell/big+yellow+taxi_20075370.html
"They paved paradise and put up a parking lot. With a pink hotel, a boutique and a swinging hot spot. Well don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone"
It's about getting rid of things for what you believe to be something better, and then realising that you prefered what you originally had, but it's too late.

Janet Jackson sampled this song in a collaboration with Q-Tip. Her song was called "Got 'Til It's Gone" and Joni Mitchell did update some of the lyrics, especially the part about putting the trees in a museum. She figured it would cost a lot more that a dollar and a half today for people to go and see them.

No, it is not cool with god, Adam and Eve have been given ejected from paradise over an apple...and you opt to get there construction a carpark...it relatively is totally no longer cool...you are able to pave the stairway to heaven with solid intentions as a exchange, then you definately could get there, paradise is out...heaven continues to be a possiblilty no longer uncomplicated !!! No way are you paving paradise with a NASCAR race music!!! xx

I thought it was "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot." That would mean that they took down a beautiful place and turned it into something mundane.

It's referring to people tearing down trees and building shopping malls (and parking lots). It's about how people are ruining nature by building on top of it. And yes, it's "paved paradise"

in West Hollywood in the 30 and 40 s there was a beautiful hotel on the corner of Crescent Heights and Sunset Blvd... it was called the Garden of Allah ...it was a series of bungalows and pools set amongst palms and ferns and it was owned and operated by a silent film actress of the 1920 s named Allah Nazivoma... the Hollywood stars of the time loved it because they could have their illicit trysts in this place and it lost amongst the bungalows and pools .... it was paved and was made into a strip center and this where the lyric comes from .... they paved paradise and put up a parking lot .
