The reason I'm asking this question is that the American military are putting bases in the former soviet union but they are telling the russian there is no need to be concern. Same situation if China put bases in Mexico.

I agree.. I cannot imagine that we would not be up in arms and really mad if suddenly the Soviet Union started putting bases in Mexico.. why do we expect them to trust us, when we would not trust them.. it is a sad world we live in.

Countries with megga amounts of power should not
provoke each other at the expense of less powerful
nations.....True, the Monroe Doctrine comes to mind,
but it's null and void...Russia built missile silos and
filled them with ICBM's during the Cuban Crisis...the
Monroe Doctrine didn't stop them...Kennedy did!

To delibertly provoke a country as powerful as Russia
or the USA, is pure insanity....the missile defense
system the US wants to put in eastern Europe won't
protect anyone...it will only cost the US an arm and a leg
probably re-kindle the Cold War...If countries like Iran
decide to use their weapons, they would do so thinking
Russia or China would stand behind them....and they
probably would! No missile defense could be effective
against such awesome power.....there must be a better
way to curb the likes of Iran. (Right now it is too tender
for the US or other western nations to 'muscle' in on
the once Eastern Bloc countries that were controlled
by the former Soviet Union.....some politics may have
changed, but the same people still live there. It's
their home and they are proud of it...to mock them
at this time by putting military bases will make them
very angry...just as if Russia started putting more bases
in Cuba or on Chavez's front lawn...much less in Mexico!

Why not? The Germans tried to do it too through Mexico during World War 1.... they also supect that the 9/11 terrorists came through the Southern borders and we don't need a fence?

I think there is a policy in place called "The Monroe Doctrine"? I think the American government would be very concerned if Russia tried to do that and would take appropriate action--------up to and including the Polosi Congress passing a resolution condemning Russia for it.

Yes we would be very concerned. As soon as Mexico gets to a position where they think they can - they will be as power and money hungry as we are - so they may strike a deal with another Country to put a base there.

We would definitely be concerned... foreign bases near the U.S. are a threat to national security. In order to protect the U.S. population we have to make sure bases are not put in Mexico or Canada

The Mexican government is not stupid enough to invite the Russians or anyone else to set up military bases in their country.
