I have dsl/modem connection to the internet. I have tried connecting my linksys router to the modem and pick up an internet signal wirelessly but I can't get a connection. I am hooking it up correctly, I have the phone line into the modem and then an ethernet cable going to the router but still doesn't work. I can get on the internet bypassing the router and connecting the ethernet cable from my modem directly to my laptop but I want to be able to use my laptop wirelessly because it is a wireless laptop. I was thinking of trying to reinstall the linksys program but now it will not pick up an internet connection!!!! Please help I am so frustrated!!

most likely ur modem is not getting the ip renewed .. its probably dynamic ... first i would try unplugging the modem and router for awhile maybe an hour or so .. then plug them back in .. also it definitely has nothing to do with the linksys software and u dont need to install that ..

When you connect using just modem and the computer, did you have to install any software or enter any username/password?
If you did, you need to go into your router configuration and set up it there. It's really easy, you just need to read the manual and follow the steps.

The other possible issue is connection between the router and your laptop. Your linksys program should let you know if you are connected to the router or not...

By the way, I'm not very happy with linksys hardware - I had an issue when one laptop could connect to it and an other (some dell model) and my pocket pc couldn't.

need a bit more info:
what wireless card do you have on your laptop?
Is it built in? PCI? USB?

with some laptops with built in cards, there's a button that turns the card on, sometimes located on the side of the laptop kinda like this:
(( . ))
I
If that doesn't work, connect to the linksys router via the ethernet cable. wait for the network connection to say it's connected.
click start>run
--type 'cmd' then press Enter
--type 'ipconfig /all' in the command prompt
look for the default Gateway IP address (usually 192.168.0.1)
open up your web browser and got to http://192.168.0.1 (or whatever your Gateway address is)
you should be prompted for a user password, type those in
Check the settings in the router for DHCP, turn that on.
check the settings for SSID Broadcast, turn that on.
Be sure to require some kind of password authentication to connect to the wireless connection and ALSO change the password you used to log into the router from whatever the default setting is.

Once you've done all that, you should be able to go to Start>settings>network connections, right-click on the wireless connection and select properties.
check your TCP/IP settings from the first tab that diplays by highlighting it and clicking Properties, be sure that Obtain IP Address Automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected. click OK.
in the wirless connection properties box, go to the wireless tab and click View Available Wireless Networks. refresh the list and yours should show up.

I hope this helps!

some providers cache the MAC address of the computer that is connected to the DSL modem. When you plug the router in, the provider doesn't see the same MAC address connected and denies the connection. Most routers have a configuration setting that allows MAC address spoofing. You tell the router what your computer MAC address is, and then the router pretends to be the computer when connecting to the DSL line.

What modem do you have? It may have to be bridged before the configuration you describe will work.
