Previous owner had rims on the car and she sold the rims before she sold the car to me ... She gave me the key to unlock the lug nut locks ...

Just last week we lost the key and now we really need it to get the back brakes done and where should I take it to get the locks off and we no longer want to put locks back on and put regular ones in since we don't have the rims ...

Thanks ...

I worked at a tire shop in the Motor City (detroit) for 3+ years.

Here's what we did -

1. Find a regular socket, just small enough that it doesn't slip on over the lug. (black sockets work better, as they don't break as easily.)

2. Take a heavy hammer and pound it on.

3. Use a breaker bar to loosen it. If you can't get enough leverage, slip a heavy metal pipe over the breaker bar's handle.

To get the nut out of the socket, put the socket in a vice and pound a bolt through the opening.

4. Change the brakes!

Tire and alignment shops have a tool set of universal lock wrenches. A nearby auto parts store will probably have regular lug nuts if the shop doesn't.

The shop you take it to have the brakes done should have no problem with it.

My father is a mechanic and I've had this problem before. He just got a good sized socket and hammered it on, and then he was able ot take the lug nut off.

I have managed to get those off with a pair of aircraft pliers. They are nothing more than a giant pair of channel locks, also known as water pump pliers. Or, you can grab a tool called a "nut splitter" ( no dirty jokes please) which cranks a blade down and splits the lock, or you can grab a grinder and cut them off, but this usually ruins the stud and it will have to be replaced and you can cut them with a torch (worst choice)!! lastly, sometimes a locksmith can help.

All this crap about small sockets, it doesn't work any more. Take a look at http://www.lockingwheelnutsremoved.com
