Assuming you have power for the spark and starter, try this first.

Check the oil level first.

Put a jump pack on the battery, or jumper cables on the battery of a car NOT RUNNING!

Crank the engine for no more than 30 seconds, with wide open throttle, and it will likely start, with lots of smoke, this means the oil injector leaked too much oil in the engine, and this has happened to me while mine was sitting. It might take 2 or 3 times to get it to run.

If this doesn't work. try a small amount of starting fluid in the intake. If it fires, your problem is fuel related, if not, then it is electrical.

Jim gave a very good answer. You could also put fresh gas in the bike and consider cleaning the carb. How long did the bike sit. Is there any chance the someone messed with it while it was in "impound".

you need 3 things for the bike to start: one, fresh fuel and it has to make to to the cylinders. two, spark at the spark plugs and three, compression. if you have those three, it will start. break it down and check one at a time. you will find your answer. Also, please don't jump your bike's battery from a car. this can cause untold electrical damage. If it needs the battery charged, pay the money to get a proper charger for a motorcycle battery. Get it from a dealer who carries that brand of bike and you can't go wrong.

If you have a drain screw on the bottom of the carburetor, open it and let everything drain out of the carburetor and close it up again. Then try to start again.

I have to do this with my Elite if it sits for a long time.
