Every day people ask questions here about legalizing marijuana but no one does anything about it. Is that because you are busy getting high and watching cartoons? (sorry, couldn't resist).
I have to say that, to me, this is more a matter of priorities than anything else. If we could legalize marijuana and convice those who grow opium poppies to produce marijuana instead of opium, we would be much better off. Can we convince our politicians of this?
Just to be sure that people understand what I am saying, I also think that it is a matter of what the government should tell us to do. It is a freedom issue for me.
(I am sure the bush administration will be tapping my phone calls from now on LOL).

Xuser that is a great idea. Every one that is in favor of legalizing marijuana should take one day off.

Seriously depressed, like put a bullet in your head depressed. I really cannot smoke it. This isn't about whether you smoke pot or not to me. It is about whether the government tells you that you can smoke pot or not.

I think the issue of legalization, isn't that important therefore nobody is really motivated. Should it be legal ?...probably... is anyone going to take time off work to protest ?...probably not.
However, if everyone who smoked it took the day off of work... we would be missing some doctors, teachers, policeman, public officials, public servants, etc. The gross misconception is that people who smoke pot are losers and are not successful. That coudn't be further from the truth... The truth is the people who are professionally successful cannot admit that they smoke, or they lose their careers, because the Regan years did such a good job of demonizing pot smokers.
You want to legalize MaryJ ?...just keep smokin it, sit back and wait.... All in due time.
But right now, there are more important issues that are mobilizing people to take action. There's just not enough room at the table for a Marijuana issue.
-----ADDition---
Why does ZardoZ think that driving stoned is worse than driving drunk ?....alcohol is legal and regulated and taxed....but it wasn't always legal now was it ?!

If aside from anything I believe it should be legal and regulated as the concept that the government can tell you what you're allowed to put into your body is immoral at best.
But from a logic standpoint marijuana should be the least of our concerns. The main it's decriminalized in many heavily populated areas is because the police have more important things to do then arrest 17 year olds smoking pot behind the movie theater. The government should be following the same concept, there's bigger issues to spend money on and more dangerous drugs too.
There's no reason for marijuana to be illegal, look at the DEA's own statistics on it's site, they show marijuana to have killed 0, as in NO ONE amount of people, while they show tobacco and alcohol every year at over 200,000. Marijuana is minorly psychologically addictive at best and not physically addictive while tobacco and alcohol are both. Marijuana makes you think, alcohol dumbs you down, people that smoke pot preach love and peace, alcoholics often go home and beat their wife. Marijuana DOES NOT cause cancer despite what many people would like to think, read the news people:

Legalize it so it can be taxed just like alcohol & tobacco. Lets a lot more vacancies in prison for people who are the real problems here, the tax evaders.
Also, lets stop with the airport stuff. If I were a terrorist, think I would do it again with a plane? Hello!
As long as we are "fixing" things, lets ban STD's by ridding babies of their sexuality altogether. We have drugs that make ya feel better than sex, and who cares if there aren't anymore kids? Means a lot more $$ for us!
Besides, India, China, & third world countries are always going to have them, and obviously they don't care as they screw themselves out of a place at the dinner table without a problem.
If they show hostility towards us, hey, that's what the bombs are for, right?
My way or the highway in "if it feels good, do it" America!

It IS completely stupid and wrong, isn't it?
I truly don't know why this hasn't happened. The only people to gain from keeping it illegal are those who profit by its illegality (that is, who profit most by selling it).
Yes, it's a liberty issue. Why does the government have the right to tell me what forms of recreation I'm allowed to enjoy?
And there is absolutely no logic to which drugs are legal and which illegal.
But even with the dangerous drugs, the law is NOT the way to deal with a health problem.

In my opinion God put it here for mankind to use in the event the government became to stressful and oppressive, so we could at least dull the pain a little. The problem is if they legalize it we may be worse off than buying and possessing it illegally. The regulations and taxes will be unreal. They will never allow you to grow your own so forget about that. Other than that I am all for it.
If you think it's expensive now, wait until the government gets control of it.

Well there would be a lot less crabby people in this world, thats for sure, but the government makes too much money off this, just think of how many people they would have to let out of prison who are locked up for pot, and a murder gets let out early cause they are so overcrowded, people should make a huge batch of brownies and mail it to all the government, see how many of them stop being such greedy self centered butt holes!! LOL But then we would also be pissing off all the people who hate smoking ciggerettes to, can you imagine the responses you would get if they legalized pot. Good Luck

The best many can do is try and keep the issue alive, such as groups like NORML. It is long since past time for this disaster involving it's illegality to end. Just how many people need to be imprisoned, for doing something that is no ones business but their own, before we decide enough is enough? Meanwhile Alcohol and Tobacco kill hundreds of thousands every year, but somehow that's okay. The hypocrisy is just stunning to observe.

Yeah, it should be legalized, if for no other reason but to make room in our prison system for child molesters. You are 100% correct… it is a matter of priorities. Apparently, our Nation’s priorities are not about taking care of our children.
There is way too much money being made in the black market to legalize pot. It’s all about the bucks!

The reason why we will never legalize marijuana is because the local, state, and federal government makes millions of dollars each year on busts, raids and arrests. Yet, we put these non-violent so-called criminals in jail and responsible tax payers have to cough up the funds to take care of them. It's a big scam in my opinion.

To be honest, yours is the first reference I've seen in this forum about legalizing dope.
Since I have experienced unpleasant side effects from dope -- though I like the smell, I get sick and have difficulty breathing -- I don't really have an opinion one way or the other.
I've enjoyed opium, now and then, in my youth, however...
----------
By the way: I'm trying to quit cigarettes for the UMPTEENTH time, and I'm determined to make it this time. Dope? Not nearly as nasty as tobacco!
