I was born without a pituitary gland, I stopped breathing at birth, turned blue, and had to be revived with a tube of oxygen shoved down my throat. I wound up needing serious medical care as a child and I was one of the first recipients of the human-growth-hormone (HGH) program, because I was so sick and my body wouldn't grow normally (I was a midget).
My parents would have gone bankrupt if it weren't for my NIH grant, even with the grant they struggled to put food on the table. But this program was an enormous success in a number of ways: 1) it helped advance cancer research, DNA research, and science in general, 2) it saved the lives of countless children, and kept their families financially solvent, 3) it lead to many new treatments, and new synthetic drugs for controlling epilepsy, diabetes, & aging, & 4) I'm now taller than both of my parents, and healthier than ever before!
I have a great life today because of government subsidized healthcare, so socialized medicine does work, & very well I might add. As good as SCHIP is for struggling families, it's really a stop-gap measure. The more complete option is Single Payer Universal Healthcare and it will probably happen after 2008, since 12 Republican incumbents have announced their resignations this term, as Bush's approval ratings have hit bottom at 24%, the second lowest rating ever recorded.

Don't you just love those senators that are voting against socialized medicine for some people while they, making $165,000 per year are receiving the very best of socialized medicine that can be provided. I really enjoy the double standard that has developed in our country over national health care. And we, the people, fall for this rhetoric. Aren't members of congress receiving national health care????

How so bittersweet for me, a Vermont lesbian... my important different and that i have been at the same time monogamously for 15.5 years, and we are having extreme issues.... extreme sufficient for us to be searching for a couples counselor. i'm so happy that that is going to be marriage and by no skill civil union (it really is a mouthful to assert) because those who're rather in love should be allowed to marry his/her one genuine love...

i listened to bush speak as he vetoed this bill.

he stated that he was vetoeing this bill because he wanted to be a part of the process.

he didn't even say it was bad or wrong.

it's as though we have an eight year old as our president.
