There are a lot of historical figures such as Robespierre and Napoleon. But I would say it is fiction...she just uses the historical figures to move the story along.

The only things that are real, as far as I know, are the historical settings. There was a Charlemagne, there probably was an abbey like the one she described, and you will probably find African landscape like she described. Beyond that, it's similar to The DaVinci Code--using historical characters to carry a fictional story.
