I live in an area where there is heavy calcium and lime in the water so the toilet always looked dirty. I bought muratic acid like for etching concrete and used it in the bowl left it overnight. By morning it looked brand new!

I drop those toilet bleach tablets into the tank once a month. That ensure that a bit of bleach gets deposited into the commode with every flush. I also clean my toilet each week using Clorox toilet cleaner and a toilet brush.
I'm fortunate that I do not have hard water, as those stains are harder to remove. The best products for removing tough stains are products that are gel-like so they stick to the area, and then give it a good scrubbing.

This could be caused by chemicals in the water. Try cleaning the little holes in the rim. Usually a straightened coat hanger will work. After you have cleaned them out, try flushing two or three times. You may then want to put a cleaner in the toilet tank, to keep the bowl clean. If you look up www.Thisoldhouse.com, they have a lot of hints about these things.

This will sound strange, but it works. Get the denture cleaning tablets that you drop in water. Put 2-3 of them in the TANK of your toilet. Let them sit for the amount of time and flush. This will clean build up out of the tank and help keep bowl clean. After you flush a couple of times, clean the bowl and use a toilet bowl cleaner, like The Works (blue label for toilets) toilet bowl cleaner and scrub. Once a month, drop some tablets in the tank to keep it clean.

Use Barkeepers' Friend or Zud, both contain oxalic acid which will remove that rust like magic. Everything else you tried doesn't have oxalic acid.
