I dropped my bike in the water when crossing a small river. The exhaust wasn't submerged but I think water got under the seat (a KDX 200) and into the air box. I managed to push it out the the other side of the river and after much kicking managed to get it started. Quite a bit of water shot out the exhaust and the idling was pretty rough but after riding for a bit it came right again.

Is there anything that may get damaged from any residual water that may be in the system? Should I clean the and reoil the air filter and change the oil in the gearbox? My knowledge of motors is limited (which you can tell) and I am not sure if water can get past the piston rings and end up in the gearbox (like in a 4 stroke). Any help appreciated!

I'd change the oil for sure, as water-contaminated oil is NOT great at lubricating. You'll be able to tell if it's contaminated, as it'll take on a "coffee-with-cream" color, and may foam excessively. You should probably change oil on this bike fairly frequently anyway.

Cleaning and re-oiling the air filter is a good idea, and should be done fairly frequently anyway. You'll also want to make sure that there's no extra water trapped in the airbox. Those drains sometimes get clogged.

I also would think about checking your spark plug (it started, so shouldn't be too bad) and making sure that your electronics (CDI box, spark plug wire and boot) are dry.

Wouldn't hurt to make sure that your shock linkage, swingarm pivot, axles and footpeg and shift lever pivots are greased.

good explaination Thumprr...

the KDX is virtually bullet proof and should be fine with an oil change & cleaned (and reoiled) air filter.

might also want to check and lube other parts as Thumprr stated, along with cables.

I have owned 6 KDX (175, 200, 220) over the years, great bikes!!!

do no longer care with regard to the 365 days of the motorbike, what's the 365 days the battery. must be in common terms a foul electric powered connection, as previous poster reported, yet voltage extremely would not commence your motorbike, amperage does. An 'unused' battery (no lights, starter) can instruct 12v yet would be much less below a load. i will say that's time for a clean battery.

Follow Thumprr's advice.

You should probably paper-towel off what you can reach, to remove clinging drops of water, and to forestall corrosion.
