What the other guy said. The ignorant thinking, actions, and thoughts portrayed by hip hop is what is ruining America. Some of the blame goes to parents that should not be parents allowing the kids to listen and watch what ever they want to. The other part of the blame is this crap music. Which by the way is nothing more than talentless hacks anymore. Do not get me wrong. I grew up listening to N.W.A, Wu Tang, Dre,Snoop and all of that good stuff. I also had a super strict father and mother that set me straight. It was all balanced. Now you have these kids going around unabated doing whatever. They listen to all the sex, violence, and ignorant lyrics, take it as a way of life then end up in prison, pregnant at a young age, or worse. What makes it KIND OF laughable is all these suburban and small town white people that think they are all bad a$sed gangstas listening to that stuff. So now you have this culture that has infiltrated main stream culture unchecked and it is dragging the whole place down with them.Instead of getting an education they are waiting for all the easy 'benjamins' to roll in like they hear in the songs. Then they get this idea in their head and 99% of them end up miserable failures that weigh on the rest of society.

I would say hip-hop culture could be a factor among many factors that are negatively affecting the NFL. But it's got to be way down on the list... The NFL makes a lot of money off African Americans and the hip hop culture. How many people buy NFL jerseys because a lot of hip hop singers wear it on their videos? Most of the videos don't show an actual NFL team, but football jerseys have become a fashion statement.
If anything is wrong about hip-hop on the football field, it's the perception that it causes a player to be more self-centered than team-oriented. But I think we can blame MONEY as much as hip-hop for that problem. If a Chad Johnson or Larry Johnson doesn't get enough touches and has a lousy season, that's potentially less money for them. They need touchdowns, yards, and/or Pro Bowl appearances to meet financial incentives. Then you add less national exposure which means less advertising revenue for the player.
We didn't say a whole lot about Matt Leinart's whining about being benched for Kurt Warner earlier this season... But if Leinart was black, would we have a different impression? Would we say he was selfish and not team-oriented? Not sure...

Hip-hop/rap has done a very effective job of bringing the social status of Blacks way down - that much is obvious. That ugly, ultra low sub-culture has placed so much emphasis on "being from the ghetto," on drugs, violence, on representing women in an animalistic way, on guns, hookers and pimps - how could any of this possibly have had an edifying effect? The "poetry" they create ISN'T poetry. It's rhyme. Any idiot can rhyme words. Poetry is something else altogether. HipHop/Rap is a lowly, excremental expression of street thugs whose perceptions of the world are not far above the perceptions of animals, and not very intelligent animals at that. HipHop/Rap has profoundly affected the way the rest of the world sees Black culture - fortunately there are Black writers speaking out against it, but at the same time, I don't know how much good that's done? One more thing: HipHop/Rap has a HUGE White audience -- go figure ...

Usually i agree with Mr. Whitlock. But in this case, i believe that the title of the article is a little misleading. He made NO CONNECTION between selfish athlete and hip-hop. Just because the athletes in questions are African-American, it doesn't mean to they are representing hip-hop. Ignorance, selfishness, cry baby me first attitude is not representative of hip-hop or its culture. So while the title is flashy, the article was left with no substance....(in the correlation between hip-hop and the athletes in question!)

Interesting article.
I don't think it is the end of the black player, just the type of players that they described. As you know, the majority of black players in the NFL play with dignity and class, it is the showboat type players, both black and white, that ruin the reputation of a sport's league. The NBA is horrible that way.
When you see players like Marvin Harrison, it shows that it is all culture and nothing at all to do with race. There isn't a classier guy in the NFL.

That is soooo dumb!! Last time I watched an NFL game I did not see dee jays with turntables on the sideline "cuttin' it up" while some em cee rapped, or breakdancers performing at halftime. You've got to be kidding me. There are roughly 260 million non-blacks people living in the U.S., and we're conerned about a few hundred black football players. Here's my question: Did Rock n Roll culture ruin this country, is Country and Western ruining NASCAR? Right now, the biggest sports story concerning a pro sports league is the steriod issue in MLB. Do you think hip hop is ruining baseball? My point is, baseball is overwhelmingly non African American. Yet, with all the problems in MLB, no one has even suggested that any ethnically perceived culture is the problem. Bottom line: Many people are racist and don't even realize it. You probably don't even care about the NFL. And for the record, I don't care who wrote it. Just because you're black does not mean that you can't have bigoted views toward black people. This question is a joke.

Wow, I love how music is raising children now a days. I didnt know music made babies. I am not a hip hop fan, I actually detest most of it but if I do something wrong I am not about to say some rapper's song made me do it. Stop blaming music and hold people accountable for their actions. The parents who do not spend time with their children and teach them the difference between "entertainment" and reality. And blame the people that decide to attempt to mimic the music they listen. They have a choice, no rapper is holding a gun to their head making them act that way.

O.K, lets see here. The hip hop culture encourages drug use, violence, degradation of woman, zero accountability for ones actions, laziness, perversion, disrespect for authority, racism, and so on and so forth. Now I say lets turn a blind eye to what is going on in our society and let the likes of Kayne West, Snoop Dog, Mike Vick and Pac Man keep doing their thing. They just keepin it real.
