I am moving into an old farmhouse that has been vacant for a year. I have not yet moved in, but I can see the wasps in the house and flying around by the roof. I cant see any nests, so I am assuming they are getting in the cracks in the wood. The house is two stories high, so getting up there with a ladder and shooting blindly is not really an option. I know that the first frost will kill em, but from what I understand, the queen just lies dormant until spring. I am wondering if setting off a few bombs in the attic will get them. Will the bomb poison reach them from the attic if the bombs are placed near where I am seeing them go in and out from the outside? Any other suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.
P.S. Just bought the house and don't have the hundreds available for an exterminator

I HATE wasps!! My kids have been stung repeatedly this fall! My suggestion to you is to get those bug bombs. They are inexpensive and quite effective. Do it in the evening when the wasps are not active. If you can get up into the attic, put one there. They tend to cover about 5000 cubic feet (that's about the equivilant of a 25x25 foot room without tall ceilings) so grab a couple, put one in each room. If the home has been vacant that long, I'm sure you have other critters in there that need to be reloacted also.. the bomb will take care of them as well. Leave the house closed up as tightly as possible overnight, then in the morning come open the door and let it air out before you go back in, Then locate the nest (if you can) and destory it. Be careful, i'd suggest wrapping it in garbage bags.. 2 or 3.... and stomping it buringing it anything...If the queen is in there, 9 times out of 10 she'll still be alive. You have to kill her or she'll start over again... Good luck!

You may want to bomb the attic and house BEFORE you move in. Then be sure to clean all the floors and walls as you are moving in.

During the clean up, take the time to look for their nests. Any nests not destroyed may be used AGAIN next year by new wasps. Pull the nest down, and crush it. (It may contain live wasps, be careful.)

I've had a problem with wasps in the past and destroying the nexts regularly is one of the only ways i know of to get rid of them for good.

Another thing you should do is to caulk up those cracks before winter. Both for y our own comfort and to keep out any unwanted pests. As the weather gets cooler, they look for places to go, usually inside a house, thorugh the cracks.

You could try a bomb thing--I never tried one--but once the frost comes and activity dies down, get up there and caulk any cracks or holes so that they can't return.

Warning: Don't do what my grandfather did!! They had wasps and nests on their side porch. He tried to smoke them out and burned down the porch!!

Good luck!

once you progression the nest it often dies anyhow. this isn't something greater advantageous than a brood chamber for the queen wasp and something of the wasps are her infertile daughters. the staff do no longer lay eggs themselves. Use the spray and be cautious to no longer get stung.
