From your avatar, I guess your talking about
automotive batteries.
(Lead, lead oxide, and sulphuric acid.)
Sorry, an amateur without some complex equipment
should not try it.
All batteries contain some heavy metals and
toxic chemicals as electrolytes.
Let the pros do it.

If it is automotive batteries, they are carried to a smelter, like Sanders Lead in Troy, AL or Doe Run in Boss, MO. They are crushed and shredded. The plastic lead acid and paper(foam) are separated and recycled, usually into batteries again. Johnson Controls is the largest manufacturer in the US, they may have something on their website.

In the area I live in almost all cities have a recycling center where you can take the batteries regardless of type and/or they have a day set aside at different times when the city will pickup all types of toxic materials such as batteries, computers, etc.

Any Public Library or Automotive Battery store will recycle your batteries for you.

You can check with your local dump and they can tell you were to recycle your old batteries. Most dump sites will recycle your batteries.
