Weight gain is a side affect that most women get because of being on the depo shot. It is not necessarily because of increased appetite. My appetite NEVER changed while on depo and I gained a LOT of weight.

I was on it for four years and I'm OFF of it. I'm on Kariva (1 1/2 years) and I'm side affect FREE and my weight is coming off slowly but surely.

I would reconsider this shot as there are far more negative side affects and health risks that many women suffer while on this shot (I lovingly call poison).

Check out the reviews at http://www.rateitall.com/t-330-birth-control-methods.aspx and google "depo provera lawsuit".

Your doctor didn't tell you??? One of the major side effects of Depo is weight gain!! About 5 lbs per year. My doctor made sure I knew that before he let me switch from pills to Depo. He was like "Are you sure about this? Are you positive you won't mind the weight gain??" And I didn't mind of course cuz I've always been so skinny my whole life like less than 100 lbs. So on Depo I didn't really gain much weight but it's true I didn't lose any weight from being pregnant like I did with my 1st baby. I was 135 lbs full term and my doc started my Depo 6 weeks postpartem(cuz I got pregnant while on the pill) and after that I stayed around 120-125 lbs for two years. At my last physical I switched back to the pill cuz I hate needles and my doc is a teaching doc. He likes to give student nurses time in his office so every time I had a shot it was a different nurse and their inexperience hurt so bad. It was terrible. So now I'm dropping weight so fast. It's been a year and I'm down to 110 lbs. already. I'm not even trying to lose weight or diet or anything. I'm still eating the same and the same amount of food but I'm naturally going back down to my original weight. So if your doc didn't tell you about this side effect go and ask about it. They should've told you.

I was on depo for 6 months and at the end of those six months I had gained 60 pounds! I was not changing my habits, it just seemed that everything I ate went straight to fat. Depo has made allot of people "blow" up. Plus it takes a long long time to get out of your system when you are ready to stop BC methods. Based on that alone, I think Depo needs to be re-evaluated!

I too was on the "shot" for a few years. I gained 45 pounds on that shot. Each and every time I went I kept gaining 3-5lbs. I have been off it for 3 years now and have lost 25 of it. My recommendation to you would be try something new. Everyone I know who ever went on that gained weight. Talk to your doctor.

Everybody I know has gained weight with the shot. The only way they lost was starting a different type of birth control. Good Luck

Oh yes! I was on Depo for 2 years about 13 years ago. I think I gained 20 lbs and I could not lose it for the life of me. If it's any consolation....you'd gain way more if you got pregnant!....LOL

Injection of Depo - Provera is undoubtedly now not for you. It is Banned in New Zealand and Australia and a few states of USA. Be thankful you didn't get Menorrhagia (Heavy intervals). Do now not take into account depo - provers as your option of birth control. If you maintain forgetting the tablet. Consider copper t loop.
