made their cocoons. Do I need to set them outside or will they be able to do their transformation indoors?

While you CAN do this inside the house, here is the problem with that. If these are the types of butterflies that need to eat, they will probably do that BEFORE the plants that they require are available, if you are in a place that has winter. Also, while they may emerge (hopefully), since they will probably do so early, they will have no other butterflies to mate with. If you are lucky enough to have a mating pair, if the female does lay eggs, again, there will be no available food source. Please consider all this before you reach a final decision.

Keep them indoors in a very LARGE but airy container. When they emerge from their cocoon they are very vulnerable for a few hours and if it is too moist inside the wings can stick and become damaged.

Then after they have unfolded and stretched out and dried completely you can take the container outside and release them.

A commerical size extra large pickle jar with a screen top and a smooth hard paper floor will suffice.

As long as the jar is big enough the butterfly will be able to transform inside the jar. Although once turned into a butterfly I would release it back outside.

They are able to make the transformation indoors. I did that for school once. It was really cool.
