i agree with the other posters

but i have to tell you that some people use not as an insult or a compliment but kind of a crack because they don't care for animals maybe as much as you do

for instance, some people don't mind visiting those people with pets, but become annoyed when the pets try to sniff them or sit on say, a couch, near them

also, many animal lovers are vegetarian or vegan or animal conscious, and that term could be used as code to others that say in a potluck they should not bring certain foods or maybe talk a certain way about animals

so in this way, it is not an insult or a compliment, as i said

It's a compliment. Just check out MIchael Vicks. We are quite a 'pet loving' society. That doesn't mean all Americans have or love animals. But as a rule, if you are called an 'animal hater', it is not a good thing here.

Typically, when someone calls you an animal lover, it is because you love animals. I haven't heard of it being an insult.

I think it is jsut a description of how the other person perceives your interests.

It just means you like animals... But it can go too far in some cases and be annoying. But for the most part everyone likes animals
