actually, if it's ON the side maybe you could paint the side of the table with some funky ivy leaves or a pattern to disguise the burn.

depending on the size of the burn, you can sand the area down lightly with course sand paper.. then find some stain that closely resembles what you already have... it will leave a bump in the table, but the dark burn will be gone

And if you don't want to use a tablecloth, sand and restain your table, or perhaps even paint and put some kind of sealer on it.
