Java programs run through what is a called a Virtual machine. The only way for the Java code to run is to interface with the VM. You can't run Java programs with out the Java Virtual machine installed on your computer. Not that many applications actually use java. but a lot of websites program in some form of java (like mine). our whole application is made to run through the a web browser onto your machine through the Virutal Machine. The good thing about this is we don't have to worry about what each person has installed, as long as they have the Virtual machine installed (Java) then they can run it.
So no you don't need it for your computer to run. But it won't be long you well get to a website that needs java and you well be asked to install it again.

The langage in which most websites are written (html) is able to display text, pictures and links. But that is about all. For a web site to do anything fancy (such as play a game, animation, show videos, etc) they use small programs written in the Java programming language. You have to have Java on your computer to use those web pages.
Without Java, many web pages will not work.

Well, sounds like you're going into the field of IT. If so, they Java is definitely the choice. Although you still see a large group of C and C++ users around today, their usages are decreasing. Java has many good points such as cross-platform, and constantly developing VM and libraries. The Strongest point for Java is it's ability to create Web application. We are stepping into a service era, and the economy's development depends on the Internet. This is why Java is one of today's most potential-wise best language to learn. I would recommend the field of Web development, because it's the most open and has the most job space.

Certain websites run JAVA applications (Yahoo Games is an example) and you want to be able to load, view and use these Java components; therefor it's useful to have Java installed on your machine. It allows you to view/use java applications and subcomponents in web sites.

Many applications use the Java platform. games speedtest websites and many more. If you uninstalled it, when you go to a website with Java content, an auto installer will appear asking you to download and install it.
I know some people who refuse to use Java. They claim lots of viruses and spyware codes are inbedded into the Jars.

You do not need Java unless a web page or an application you use relies on it. It's small and doesn't hurt anything, doesn't run or do anything until it's asked to. I would just leave it on, even though I hate Java :)
