Back in 1975, I was in a production of Godspell at the Little Theatre on the Square in Sullivan IL. I played Gilmer and sang Learn Your Lessons. I also played the guitar and sang the harmony for Where Are You Going and played the recorder for All Good Gifts.

It was a wonderful experience. I'm still in contact with several of the people from that cast more than 30 years later.

On the other hand, I saw a production of it a few years ago at the St. Louis Municipal Opera (the Muny) and it was pretty awful. There was no charm at all in a bunch of adults running around the stage acting like children. As much as I loved the show, maybe I'm just too old to appreciate it any more.

I wasn't in the production, I was the assistant scenographer. It was a pretty fun experience, but the directer was a little off his rocker. The resulting production was awesome, though - we completely transformed our little theatre (and some of the actors, too).

The great thing about Godspell is that there is so little structure specified in the score/script/book that the entire thing is open to interpretation. A lot of musicals are written so that it's pretty much the same no matter where it's performed/who produces it. But with Godspell, I've never seen it performed the same way twice, which I find refreshing.

I was in a stage show in high school as Gilmer (I had a puppet). It was truly one of the best experiences of my life. It's a wonderful show and since it's a very small cast you really get to know one another. By closing night I was bawling when Jesus dies.
